Camera Controls Overview

Canon EOS 90D “Q Screen”

Most cameras have a screen similar to this which summarises the camera settings and often provides a means of changing those settings. It is good practice to check this screen at the start of any assignment in case something was changed in the last outing. I have a standard set up that I return to every time I put the camera away.

If we go through each of the items on this screen you will understand the scope of ajustments you can make. We will look at each control over time, some (highlighted) are very important and some you are unlikely to need.

  1. The selected shooting mode

  2. Shutter speed and aperture.

  3. ISO setting

  4. Exposure compensation

  5. Camera WiFi on or off.

  6. Picture Styles - this tells the camera how to interpret the readings from the sensor when it creates the jpeg output. Getting this right has a large effect on the quality of the final output if you do not process RAW files. (RAW is a huge new topic but I think I am the only one working with RAW files.)

  7. White Balance

  8. White Balance Correction

  9. Auto Lighting Optimiser

  10. Custom Controls

  11. Autofocus mode

  12. Focus point selection

  13. Drive Mode

  14. Metering Mode

  15. (Output) Image Quality

  16. Battery Level

  17. Media card capacity
