Introducing Photomator – Apple’s New Photo Editing App
Apple has just released Photomator, a powerful new photo-editing app designed to bring professional-level tools into a package that’s intuitive and accessible. For those of us who already edit with Apple Photos or Google Photos, Photomator sits a step higher: it offers more creative control while remaining much easier to learn than Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom.
What makes Photomator different?
One-tap enhancements – Intelligent adjustments powered by machine learning can instantly balance colour, contrast, and exposure.
Layer-based editing – Unlike Apple Photos, you can work with layers, masks, and selective adjustments, making it possible to edit only the areas you want.
RAW support – If you shoot with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, Photomator can handle RAW files directly, preserving maximum detail and flexibility.
Seamless with Apple Photos – Your edits sync across devices through iCloud, so you can start on your iPhone, continue on your iPad, and finish on your Mac without fuss.
Why might you want it?
For many photographers in our club, the leap from taking photos on a phone to editing them on a computer can feel daunting. Photomator offers a middle ground: more control than the simple sliders in Photos, but without the steep learning curve of Photoshop. It’s particularly appealing if you want to experiment with black & white conversion, selective colour, or more refined adjustments to light and texture.
Availability
Photomator is available now on the Mac App Store and the iOS App Store. Apple offers a free trial, with a one-off purchase or subscription option if you decide to keep it.
👉 Club tip: If you already share your images with WGPC via Google Photos, Photomator can be a great tool for refining your edits before uploading. Just remember to export your files in a standard format (JPEG or PNG) rather than Apple’s proprietary HEIC, so everyone can view them easily.
