The Photography Club

Taking More, Taking Better Photographs

The Wadswick Green Photography Club aims are quite simple and are encapsulated in the headline above.

  • To take more photographs, and

  • To increase the quality of the photographs we take.

The club does not focus on equipment and caters for all types of camera from mobile phone/tablet to high end “traditional “cameras.

We meet once a month for a few hours and alternate between indoor meetings for constructive criticism, discussion and teaching/coaching and local field trips. For the rest of the month we have an online presence through Google Photos, a weekly email and blog. We try to engender a bit of discussion in order to maintain and encourage members to take photographs throughout the month.

The photography club meets:

  • On the 4th Wednesday of each month at 1030 - 1230. This meeting concentrates on “the art and science of photography”, i.e taking photographs. Every 2nd meeting will be a field trip and timings may vary due to travelling time

Members are encouraged to upload their best photos at any time and we try to generate discussion, comments and questions throughout the month. To support this, the club has a weekly newsletter email, a blog (see below) with hints and tips, and a portfolio gallery.

See the calendar below for timings and, nearer the date, agendas.

  • We use Google Photos to share photos "in the cloud" because it is usable within Windows, iOS, and Android systems.  We do not use email or apps such as WhatsApp to share photos as these methods strip out metadata from the images and reduce the file size and quality.  We want to see your work at its best quality.

Everyone is encouraged to upload their best photos during the month and to comment on your own and other people's photos.  The aim is to encourage dialogue and maintain interest in photography throughout the month, not just at meetings.  It is not as active as I have hoped, so please feel free to add comments and ask questions about other people's efforts.

  • At the end of each month I copy all the photos from the upload folder into a portfolio website where the photos are organised by both date and photographer. This builds into your own personal portfolio.

Note: IPad/iPhones often default to Apple proprietary standards that are not readable by some club members and are not compatible with the Adobe software I use for our portfolio website.  I can convert the formats if necessary but it is a pain!

  • The Club Blog is a set of more detailed technical articles hosted on the WG residents website. It is intended as a reference site to record articles of general interest, particularly for things we may have discussed at one of our meetings.

  • Sharing photos online is an essential aspect of WGPC. We use Google Photos as it works across Apple, Windows and Android operating systems.
A WGPC guide explaining how to do this is available online.
