Getting to Know Flickr

Over the past few weeks Wadswick Green Photography Club has started using Flickr as our online gallery for sharing photographs, viewing each other’s work and encouraging discussion.

For some members this has been an easy transition. For others, Flickr has appeared rather more complicated than they expected. That’s understandable. Flickr is a powerful website with many features, most of which we simply don’t need.

To help everyone get started, I’ve produced this series of short illustrated guides. They are designed specifically for WGPC members and explain only the parts of Flickr that we use.

Don’t feel that you have to learn everything at once. Work through the guides at your own pace and, if you only remember one thing, remember this:

The aim is to enjoy photography, not to become a Flickr expert.

These first four guides cover everything you need to take part in our online photo sharing.

Guide 1 – Welcome to Flickr

Why we’ve chosen Flickr, what it can do for our club, and which features you can safely ignore for now.

Guide 2 – Creating your free Flickr account

A simple step-by-step guide to creating your own Flickr account.

Guide 3 – Uploading your first photograph

How to upload a photograph to your own Flickr account. It also explains that uploading directly to Flickr is only one way of sharing photographs with the club. If you prefer, you can continue to send your photographs to me using Google Photos, email, AirDrop or another method, and I’ll add them to the Club Gallery for you.

Guide 4 – Enjoy the Club Gallery

How to find the WGPC Flickr Gallery, browse this month’s photographs and enjoy the work of other members.

These are only the beginning. Future guides will cover topics such as commenting on photographs, marking favourites, joining the WGPC Flickr Group and organising your own Flickr photographs.

Finally, please remember that there is no such thing as a silly question. If you get stuck, don’t struggle on your own—just contact me and I’ll be happy to help.

Happy photographing!
