Untouched 11 Dec 2025
Overall impression
This was a strong and varied week, with a noticeable emphasis on:
Seasonal light (sunsets, frost, snow)
Reflections and wet surfaces
Festive interiors and displays
Graphic structure (fences, paths, railings)
There’s a pleasing balance between atmospheric observation and intentional composition, and several images would sit comfortably in a themed panel or local exhibition.
Vic Steadman – black & white muddy path
Strengths: Excellent tonal contrast and texture. The high-key path draws the eye strongly into the frame.
Suggestion: Consider whether the brightest highlight could be slightly tamed to retain surface detail and avoid pulling attention away from the texture.
Tim Ravenscroft – snowy canal scene
Strengths: Calm, beautifully balanced winter image. The canal acts as a strong leading line and the frosted trees frame the scene nicely.
Suggestion: The image is already strong; consider a very subtle contrast increase to separate the trees from the sky.
Vic Steadman – gate and muddy track at sunset
Strengths: Strong sense of place and time of day. The gate provides a natural stopping point and the warm sky contrasts nicely with the cooler ground tones.
Suggestion: A small reduction in sky height could increase the visual weight of the foreground and strengthen the lead-in.
Sunset skies & landscape silhouettes Sue Warren (two images)
Strengths: Beautiful colour in the sky, well judged exposure preserving cloud texture. The silhouetted trees and buildings anchor the scene effectively.
Suggestion: The compositions are very similar. Consider either:
A tighter crop to emphasise a single dominant tree, or
A lower viewpoint to introduce more foreground separation and depth.
Patricia Buckland – winter sunset over buildings
Strengths: Soft, restrained colour palette and a calm mood. The skyline sits well against the sky.
Suggestion: Explore whether a slightly tighter crop could reduce the dominance of the dark foreground and emphasise the sky’s colour.
Norman – Christmas village, trees, teddy display
Strengths: Warm, inviting images with good attention to detail. The miniature scenes are particularly engaging and well-lit.
Suggestion: These would benefit from a more consistent viewpoint or framing style if presented as a set. Decide whether you’re documenting the whole scene or focusing on characterful details, and commit to one approach.
Norman – polar bear figure with person
Strengths: A fun, playful image with scale and humour. The human element works well here.
Suggestion: Slightly more space above the subject might reduce the feeling of tightness at the top of the frame.
Norman – red bus in monochrome city scene
Strengths: Classic and effective selective colour. The red bus is an immediate focal point and works well against the muted background.
Suggestion: Check edge distractions and signage; a small crop could further isolate the bus and strengthen the graphic impact.
Norman - sunlight through trees
Strengths:
This is a quietly atmospheric image. The backlit trees and low winter sun create a lovely sense of depth, with the light filtering through branches giving a natural focal point. The soft flare and muted colours work well for the season and feel very appropriate for December.
What works particularly well:
The placement of the sun just off-centre avoids a static composition.
The balance between shadowed foreground and illuminated mid-ground is nicely judged.
There’s a strong mood of calm and stillness, which contrasts well with the more festive and graphic images elsewhere in the set.
Possible enhancements:
You might experiment with slightly more contrast or clarity in the mid-tones to separate the trees more clearly without losing the softness.
A very small crop from the bottom could reduce visual weight if the foreground feels a little dominant, depending on how it reads on different screens.
Overall, it’s a thoughtful, understated image that rewards slower viewing — and it fits nicely with the broader winter/light theme running through this week’s submissions.
Sue Warren – pavement puddle reflection
Strengths: Simple idea executed well. The reflected tree structure adds interest to an otherwise ordinary surface.
Suggestion: Watch the edge of the frame on the right; cropping slightly could remove distractions and make the reflection more dominant.
Diana Ross – railings receding into distance
Strengths: Strong use of repetition and perspective. The lines lead the eye naturally through the frame.
Suggestion: A marginally lower shooting angle could exaggerate the converging lines and increase visual drama.
Tim Ravenscroft – snowy scene with festive text
Strengths: Thoughtful seasonal greeting and atmosphere.
Suggestion: From a photographic standpoint, text tends to limit reusability. You might consider keeping a text-free version for critique and exhibition use.
